Mom's age at childbirth linked to son's diabetes risk
Washington, Mar 22 (ANI):
A new research has revealed that a mom's age at childbirth may affect
her baby boy's birth weight as well as his adult glucose metabolism.
Charlotte
Verroken of Ghent University Hospital in Ghent, Belgium said that their
findings indicate that women giving birth at a very young (under 25
years) or older (over 34 years) age might result in less favorable sugar
handling and thus possibly higher risk for developing type 2 diabetes
in their sons.
Maternal age at childbirth tends to be increasing
worldwide, but studies investigating the effects of this trend on the
metabolic health of the offspring are scarce. Whether or not and how
this affects children is relatively unknown, but current thinking is
that part of the association between maternal age and insulin resistance
may be related to the tendency of birth weight to increase as maternal
age rises.
Verroken added that they found that in a group of
healthy men between 25 and 45 years old, sugar handling was related to
their mother's age at childbirth, specifically, sons of mothers under 30
and over 34 years old at childbirth were more insulin resistant than
were sons of mothers between 30 and 34 years old.
Verroken
continued that moreover, sons of mothers who were younger than 25 years
old at childbirth had higher fasting blood sugar levels than sons of
older mothers.
The researchers determined that the men's total
cholesterol, glucose and insulin levels in fasting serum samples and
they evaluated insulin resistance. After adjusting for adult age and
body mass index, they found that, as the mother's age increased, the
baby's birth weight increased and his fasting glucose levels and insulin
resistance values decreased.
The sons of mothers aged 30 to 34 at
childbirth had significantly lower fasting insulin levels and insulin
resistance values compared to sons of mothers in the other age groups,
while sons of mothers aged under 25 years of age had higher fasting
glucose levels compared to sons of mothers aged 30 through 34, and sons
of mothers aged 35 and above.
These associations were independent
of adult age, birth weight and body mass index. No associations were
found between maternal age and body composition, blood pressure or
cholesterol levels. The authors called for further research before these
conclusions can be generalized. (ANI)

A new research has demonstrated that infertile couples who cannot
produce their own sex cells may finally be able to have children through
IVF after scientists achieved a key breakthrough in making sperm and
eggs from skin cells.
Researchers have converted
human skin cells in a laboratory into the "primordial germ cells"
normally found within the testes and ovaries, which develop into mature
sperm and eggs, the Independent reported.
Professor Azim Surani
of the University of Cambridge said that the development could also lead
to a better understanding of the "epigenetic" changes within human
cells that contribute to ageing and cancer because of the insights it
will give scientists about how adult human skin cells can be
reprogrammed into sperm and eggs.
Surani continued that this was
the first step in demonstrating that they could make primordial germ
cells without putting them into patients to verify they were genuine.
The
development could also lead to a better understanding of the

London, Dec 16: Has your child been skipping meals recently? Beware, it could make him/her obese, says a new study published in the
European Journal of Nutrition.
How does skipping meals can trigger obesity?

When
children skip breakfast, lunch or dinner, they naturally will tend to
crave sugary foods when they feel hungry. This promotes unhealthy food
habits like eating junk food. As a result, kids are likely to put on
excess body fat and have a greater risk of suffering from lifestyle
disorders like diabetes, heart disease and stroke.
For
the study, researchers analysed eating habits in 512 Finnish girls and
boys of six to eight years of age. The analysis found:
- Most children’s diet was far from ideal
- Less than 50% of kids ate all three main meals — breakfast, lunch and dinner – every day.
- Instead, snacks were a major source of energy and sucrose.
- A minority of the children consumed vegetables, fruit and berries as recommended.
- As many as a quarter of the children consumed sugary drinks daily.
- The intakes of saturated fat, sucrose and salt were higher and the intakes of dietary fibre
- Vitamin D and iron consumption was lower than recommended daily dose among children.
The study revealed that children who skipped meals and ate more protein were more likely to have excess body fat.
‘Based
on the findings, sticking to regular meals seems to be crucial for
preventing overweight and cardiometabolic diseases already in
childhood,’ said Aino-Maija Eloranta from University of Eastern Finland.
