Vitamin D may reduce progression of low-grade prostate cancer

Washington, Mar 23 (ANI): According to a recent research, Vitamin D consumption may lead to lowering or even reverse the progression of low-grade prostate cancer, without the need of surgery or radiation.
The tumor's aggressiveness after a prostate biopsy was measured on Gleason Grading System, and tumors with Gleason scores of 7 and above were considered aggressive and likely to spread whereas those with a score of 6 and below considered less aggressive.
Bruce Hollis, scientist at the Medical University of South Carolina, said that low-grade prostate cancer could be cured with surgery and that a person should wait for 60 days from the time of his biopsy, to undergo prostatectomy.
Hollis's team had assigned 37 men undergoing elective prostatectomies, one group received 4,000 U of vitamin D per day while the placebo group didn't receive vitamin D, and then after a period of 60 days their prostate glands were removed and examined.
Preliminary results indicated that men who had received Vitamin D intake showed improvements whereas the other group either stayed the same or got worse, thus suggesting that Vitamin D had caused dramatic changes in the expression levels of many cell lipids and proteins.
Hollis added that cancer was mainly associated with inflammation and that Vitamin D had the capacity to fight inflammation within the gland, though nothing has been known on whether the Vitamin could treat or just prevent prostate cancer but it appeared that it kept low-grade prostate cancer from being ballistic.
The research would recently be described at the 249th National Meeting and Exposition of the American Chemical Society (ACS). (ANI)

Keeping active in old age key to beating dementia

London, March 20 (ANI): Keeping your active both physically and mentally, can be key to beat dementia in old age, says a new study.
An active social life, volunteering, and being part of the community, gives older adults a sense of purpose in life, improving their health, the Daily Express reported.
Associate professor Dr Patricia Boyle at the Rush Alzheimer's Disease Centre in Chicago, said that positive psychological factors such as having a purpose in life, have been emerging as very potent determinants of health outcomes.
Dr Boyle's research looked at 453 people, average age 84, who had annual physical and psychological evaluations until they died at an average age of 90, and found that having a strong sense of what direction your life was headed in, made people less likelier to have brain damage due by blockages in blood flow, which when occurs, can trigger a stroke or damage to brain tissue.
Lead author Dr Lei Yu, said "Purpose in life differs for everyone and it is important to be thoughtful about what motivates you so you can engage in rewarding behaviours."
The study is published in the journal Stroke. (ANI)

Eating nuts reduces metabolic syndrome risk in teens

Washington, Mar 16 (ANI): A new study has indicated that modest consumption of nuts every day is associated with an improved cardiovascular risk profile among adolescents.
According to the study, adolescents who ate at least 12.9 grams per day of nuts which is the equivalent of eating a small handful three times per week had less than half the odds of non-eaters for developing metabolic syndrome and this syndrome is a cluster of clinical features that heightens the risk of early heart disease and type 2 diabetes.
The study sample was 2,233 U.S. adolescents, ages 12 to 19 years, who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) between 2003 and 2010.
Study's lead investigator Roy Kim, MD, MPH, an assistant professor of pediatrics at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and Children's Health in Dallas, said that the surprising finding is that, in spite of what we know about their health benefits, the majority of teens eat no nuts at all on a typical day.
The researchers discovered that metabolic syndrome risk decreased with each additional gram per day of nut intake, but only up to 50 g/day (about 1.8 ounces), when the benefit tapered off. Kim theorized that at higher intakes, any benefits may have been offset by eating too many calories.
Kim said that metabolic syndrome was a major public health problem and their findings at this stage show only a correlation and did not prove that the risk of metabolic disease in teens will go down by eating nuts. However, the results suggest the possibility that a simple dietary recommendation could have a significant impact on the metabolic health of adolescents.
According to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Tree, nuts contain heart-healthy unsaturated fats, fiber and other nutrients but are high in calories.

How to Reduce Stress, Depression and Angry ?
If you're stressed, whether by your job or by something more personal, the first step to feeling better is to identify the cause.
The most unhelpful thing you can do is turn to something unhealthy to help you cope, such as smoking or drinking.
“In life, there’s always a solution to a problem,” says Professor Cary Cooper, an occupational health expert at the University of Lancaster. “Not taking control of the situation and doing nothing will only make your problems worse.”
He says the keys to good stress management are building emotional strength, being in control of your situation, having a good social network and adopting a positive outlook.

Be active:

If you have a stress-related problem, physical activity can get you in the right state of mind to be able to identify the causes of your stress and find a solution. “To deal with stress effectively, you need to feel robust and you need to feel strong mentally. Exercise does that,” says Cooper.
Exercise won’t make your stress disappear, but it will reduce some of the emotional intensity that you’re feeling, clearing your thoughts and enabling you to deal with your problems more calmly.

Take control:

There’s a solution to any problem. “If you remain passive, thinking, ‘I can’t do anything about my problem’, your stress will get worse,” says Professor Cooper. “That feeling of loss of control is one of the main causes of stress and lack of wellbeing.”
The act of taking control is in itself empowering, and it's a crucial part of finding a solution that satisfies you and not someone else. Read tips about how to manage your time.

Connect with people:

A problem shared is a problem halved. A good support network of colleagues, friends and family can ease your work troubles and help you see things in a different way.
“If you don’t connect with people, you won’t have support to turn to when you need help,” says Professor Cooper. The activities we do with friends help us relax and we often have a good laugh with them, which is an excellent stress reliever.
“Talking things through with a friend will also help you find solutions to your problems,” says Professor Cooper.

Have some ‘me time’:

The UK workforce works the longest hours in Europe. The extra hours in the workplace mean that people aren’t spending enough time doing things that they really enjoy. “We all need to take some time for socialising, relaxation or exercise,” says Professor Cooper.
He recommends setting aside a couple of nights a week for some quality "me time" away from work. "By earmarking those two days, it means you won’t be tempted to work overtime on those days," he says.

Challenge yourself:

Setting yourself goals and challenges, whether at work or outside, such as learning a new language or a new sport, helps to build confidence. That in turn will help you deal with stress.
“By constantly challenging yourself you’re being proactive and taking charge of your life,” says Professor Cooper. “By continuing to learn, you become more emotionally resilient as a person. It arms you with knowledge and makes you want to do things rather than be passive, such as watching TV all the time.”

Avoid unhealthy habits:

Don't rely on alcohol, smoking and caffeine as your ways of coping. "Men more than women are likely to do this. We call this avoidance behaviour," says Professor Cooper. "Women are better at seeking support from their social circle."
Over the long term, these crutches won’t solve your problems. They’ll just create new ones. "It’s like putting your head in the sand," says Professor Cooper. "It might provide temporary relief but it won’t make the problems disappear. You need to tackle the cause of your stress."

Help other people:

Cooper says evidence shows that people who help others, through activities such as volunteering or community work, become more resilient. “Helping people who are often in situations worse than yours will help you put your problems into perspective,” says Professor Cooper. “The more you give, the more resilient and happy you feel.”
If you don't have time to volunteer, try to do someone a favour every day. It can be something as small as helping someone to cross the road or going on a coffee run for colleagues. Favours cost nothing to do, and you’ll feel better.

Work smarter, not harder:

Good time management means quality work rather than quantity. Our long-hours culture is a well-known cause of workplace illness. “You have to get a work-life balance that suits you,” says Professor Cooper.
Working smarter means prioritising your work, concentrating on the tasks that will make a real difference to your work. “Leave the least important tasks to last,” says Cooper. “Accept that your in-tray will always be full. Don’t expect it to be empty at the end of the day.”

Be positive

Look for the positives in life, and things for which you're grateful. Write down three things at the end of every day which went well or for which you're grateful.
“People don’t always appreciate what they have,” says Professor Cooper. “Try to be glass half full instead of glass half empty,” he says.
This requires a shift in perspective for those who are more naturally pessimistic.
“It can be done,” he says. “By making a conscious effort you can train yourself to be more positive about life. Problems are often a question of perspective. If you change your perspective, you may see your situation from a more positive point of view.”

Accept the things you can't change:

Changing a difficult situation isn't always possible. If this proves to be the case, recognise and accept things as they are and concentrate on everything that you do have control over.
“If your company is going under and is making redundancies, there’s nothing you can do about it,” says Professor Cooper. “There’s no point fighting it. In such a situation, you need to focus on the things that you can control, such as looking for a new job.”

How To Avoid And Remove Pimples/Acne – 21 Effective Methods That Worked For Me

If you are fed up of popping painful pimples, it is high time you do something about them. Prevention is the way to go. How do you prevent acne or pimples? Which products or remedies work best?

Pimples and Their Causes:

Pimples are small papules, pustules, skin lesions or skin inflammations and are also known as zits or spots. They are usually found on the face, back, chest and shoulders. The cause of pimples can be:
  • Excess sebum secretion
  • Bacterial infections due to poor hygiene
  • Clogging of pores due to trapped oil, dirt, dust and pollution
  • Clogging of pores due to cosmetics and makeup products
  • Accumulation of dead skin cells and grime buildup
  • Unhealthy lifestyle and dietary habits
  • Consumption of junk food
  • Not drinking enough water
  • Heredity or genes
  • Age: Teenagers are more prone to hormonal changes and a cause of acne

How to Avoid Pimples – 21 Effective Methods

The most important thing to remember is prevention is better than cure. These unwanted pimples can be prevented by following some basic skin care regimes.

1. Good Lifestyle:

Following a good hygiene routine that includes washing the face regularly to get rid of makeup, dirt, dust and grime is very important to keep pimples at bay. Cleaning the skin helps remove dead skin cells and also frees the skin from contaminants that may aggravate the growth of pimples. Do not forget to apply a toner after cleansing. Avoid popping the pimples and avoid cleansers that destroy skin balance. Check product ingredient labels for salicylic acid, neem, tea tree oil, honey or turmeric as each of these natural ingredients fight pimples. Many brands available in the market like Cetaphil, Neutrogena, Aroma Magic, Clean & Clear and Himalaya have specific cleansing products to target and help pimple-prone skin.

2. Wash Pillow Cover and Towels Regularly:

Dirty pillow covers and dirty towels aid bacterial growth, leading to breakouts. It is very important to wash pillowcases, bed sheets and towels at regular intervals. It is also a good idea to frequently wash all makeup brushes and sponges to minimize the changes of spreading bacteria.

3. Use Non-Comedogenic Makeup and Skin Care Products:

As acne is most commonly caused due to clogged pores, which are perfect for bacteria to grow and flourish, it is important to use non-comedogenic products or products that do not block the pores. Such products allow the skin to breathe and reduce the chances of skin infections, inflammation, irritation and acne. Consider, choosing oil-free and fragrance-free products.

4. Do Not Skip Moisturizing:

Contrary to popular belief, acne-prone skin needs moisturizing and hydration. Not providing the skin with enough moisture, will encourage sebaceous glands to produce more sebum or oil to compensate for moisture and leading to increased chances of acne. Consider choosing a moisturizer, which is oil-free, lightweight, water-based or gel-based and non-comedogenic will hydrate the skin without making it look oily or greasy. A basic beauty regime of cleansing, toning and moisturizing must be followed religiously.

5. Exercise:

With the hectic lifestyle nowadays, stress levels are high, just 30 minutes of daily exercise is excellent for the health as well as the skin. As daily exercise keeps hormone levels in balance and also releases toxins through sweat, it reduces the chances of pimples. Moreover, the importance of sleep should not be ignored. Take ample rest and ensure you do not over stress yourself.

6. Avoid Touching the Face:

Keep your hands away from the skin. Do not rest the chin or cheeks on your hands or dirty surfaces, as this will cause bacteria to spread. Do not pop, prick or squeeze a pimple that would further spread the infection and cause scarring. Make it a habit to wash your hands with an anti-bacterial soap before touching the facial skin. Moreover, try and keep your hair away from the face.

7. Eat Healthy:

Pimples can be prevented by following a healthy and balanced diet. Reduce carbohydrates, sugar and dairy products and include more vegetables and fruits in the diet. Drink lots of water to remain hydrated and flush out toxins from the body regularly.

Natural Remedies to Remove Pimples

Pimples can be prevented and cured by many cosmetic products and through natural remedies. Cosmetic products can be costly and can also cause side effects. Natural remedies are comparatively more cost-effective, and do not possess any side effects. There are many natural remedies to cure pimples. While some may be more effective for some, others might have little effect. It is best to try them for yourself to find how the remedy works.

12. Ice Cubes:

Apply ice over the affected area and get rid of pimples quickly. Ice freezes the skin pores and removes excessive oil and dirt that has been trapped in the pores. Ice cubes also reduce swelling and also smoothen the skin.

13. Mint Leaves:

The juice of mint leaves when applied overnight on affected areas can help get rid of acne and acne scars.

14. Apple Cider Vinegar:

Natural apple cider vinegar regulates the pH level of the skin and helps cure pimples. Add half a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar to a cup of water. Dip some cotton wool and gently apply it on the affected areas and let it stay overnight.

15. Honey:

Applying honey over the face helps prevent pimples as well as treats them. Honey contains an antibiotic that helps reduce inflammation and heals affected areas. Apply honey and let it sit for 30 minutes before washing with tepid water for healthy and glowing skin.

16. Oatmeal:

Oatmeal helps remove impurities and acts as a gentle exfloitant that absorbs excess oil and works wonderfully at clearing pimples. Cook oatmeal like you normally would. Let it cool and apply it on the cleansed face for 10 – 15 minutes. Pat dry and apply a toner and moisturizer.

17. Garlic:

Rubbing garlic cloves on the skin is very effective for healing pimples as it contains sulphur, which is an anti-septic, anti-oxidant, anti-fungal and anti-viral. Leave the juice on the skin for 5 minutes before washing it with water. Repeat the process everyday in order to get quick results.

Healthy tips for dealing with diabetes

One of my sisters, who is in her 40s, has recently been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. I don’t have the healthiest of lifestyles, so I wonder should I have my glucose checked?
There are a number of risk factors for type 2 diabetes and these include having a first degree relative with the disease, being female, obesity and being over 40 years of age. Type 2 diabetes is a disease where the body either doesn’t produce enough insulin or the cells in the body don’t react to insulin. Insulin is a hormone produced in the pancreas and it controls the amount of sugar (glucose) in your blood. The symptoms of type 2 diabetes include:
* Feeling tired.
* Poor vision.
* Recurrent infections either bacterial or fungal.
* Being thirsty.
* The need to urinate frequently.
* Weight loss.
As the symptoms develop slowly and over a period of time it is possible not to realise you have diabetes, so it is important to get an early diagnosis. I would advise you to make an appointment with your GP and arrange to have your glucose level tested. Tell your GP of your sister’s recent diagnosis. Your GP will also check your blood pressure and arrange a cholesterol test.
Lifestyle is very important in the treatment of type 2 diabetes and here are some lifestyle suggestions to consider:
* Have a healthy well balanced diet with a variety of foods and at least five portions of fruit and vegetables every day.
* Your diet should be low in fat, salt and sugar and high in fibre.
* If you are overweight, lose weight.
* Incorporate some form of physical exercise into your daily routine, ideally at least 30 minutes a day.
Aim to build up to 60 minutes a day on five days a week. If you have not been active you should first discuss this with your GP.
* If you smoke, stop.
* Reduce alcohol intake.
You should have your blood pressure and cholesterol level checked at least every six months — sooner if necessary.
My mother who is in her s 60s had a nosebleed for the first time ever last week. It stopped within minutes but I think it gave her a fright. She is in good health apart from high blood pressure. Should I encourage her to have a check up with her GP?
Although they are usually mild or self-limiting, a nose bleed (epistaxis) can be unpleasant and frightening.Anyone can get a nosebleed at any age but is more common if you are young, usually less than 10 years old, pregnant or elderly.
Many nosebleeds are from an innocent cause such as:
* Picking the nose.
* Nose injury.
* Blocked stuffy nose.
* Inflammation of the nasal passages as a result of a cold or flu.
* Blowing the nose very hard.
* Hay fever or other allergies.
Most simple nose bleeds (those with no underlying serious cause) can be treated at home with simple first aid.
Make sure to sit down and lean slightly forward; don’t tilt your head back. With the thumb and index finger, pinch the soft part of the nose firmly (just above the nostril openings but below the bridge of the nose) and hold for at least 10 minutes.Once the bleeding has stopped don’t do anything that might restart it, such as picking or blowing your nose.
Some people are at greater risk of nose bleeds if they are taking blood thinning medication such as warfarin, aspirin or if they have high blood pressure. Nose bleeds can indicate a more serious underlying problem and like any medical symptom should not be ignored.
As your mother has a history of high blood pressure, she needs to make an appointment with her GP, who can review her case. If before her appointment your mother has a heavy nose bleed or it lasts for 20-30 minutes, then she needs to seek medical attention as soon as possible.

How to maintain weight after shedding the pounds revealed

Washington, US: A new research has revealed that the challenge of long-term weight control, which every individual going through weight loss faces, is because of different genetic, epigenetic and neuro-hormones in the bodies.
A group of obesity experts led by Paul MacLean, PhD, and Rena Wing, PhD at National Institutes of Health Working Group explained personalized weight-loss strategies should be implemented to maintain the weight loss, as effective weight-loss program vary from person to person.
Researchers advised to make use of pharmacological strategies to counter the physiological changes that occur after weight loss, which require adjustments to the drug development process.
Other approaches mentioned in the report were to improve adherence to physical activity programs, intake of foods engineered to maximize palatability and satiation to improve long-term adherence to a lower-calorie diet, following strategies to decrease the perceived reward value of foods and increase impulse control and at last all the technologies and social networking to keep individuals engaged and goal-oriented.
Dr. Wing added that development of more effective approaches to weight-loss maintenance requires the integration of physiological and behavioral perspectives and a more concerted collaboration between basic and clinical researchers.

Dr. MacLean, co-chairman of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) working group said that there are many differences in individuals ranging from genetic to behavioral that lead some to do well on one approach, whereas others do not.
The report, "Innovative Research to Improve Maintenance of Weight Loss" will be published in the January 2015 issue of the journal 'Obesity'.

Is skipping meals making your child obese?

London, Dec 16: Has your child been skipping meals recently? Beware, it could make him/her obese, says a new study published in the European Journal of Nutrition.

How does skipping meals can trigger obesity?
Childhood-obesity
When children skip breakfast, lunch or dinner, they naturally will tend to crave sugary foods when they feel hungry. This promotes unhealthy food habits like eating junk food. As a result, kids are likely to put on excess body fat and have a greater risk of suffering from lifestyle disorders like diabetes, heart disease and stroke.

For the study, researchers analysed eating habits in 512 Finnish girls and boys of six to eight years of age. The analysis found:
  • Most children’s diet was far from ideal
  • Less than 50% of kids ate all three main meals — breakfast, lunch and dinner – every day.
  • Instead, snacks were a major source of energy and sucrose.
  • A minority of the children consumed vegetables, fruit and berries as recommended.
  • As many as a quarter of the children consumed sugary drinks daily.
  • The intakes of saturated fat, sucrose and salt were higher and the intakes of dietary fibre
  • Vitamin D and iron consumption was lower than recommended daily dose among children.
The study revealed that children who skipped meals and ate more protein were more likely to have excess body fat.
‘Based on the findings, sticking to regular meals seems to be crucial for preventing overweight and cardiometabolic diseases already in childhood,’ said Aino-Maija Eloranta from University of Eastern Finland.

Diet rich in salt major reason behind headaches
Washington, US: a new study has revealed that diets high in salty foods are a major culprit in headaches.
The study found that people who ate foods high in sodium (8 grams a day) had nearly one-third more headaches than people who ate foods low in sodium (about 4 grams a day). The difference persisted regardless of whether the volunteers ate a standard North American diet or one designed to lower blood pressure.
Study co-author Lawrence Appel, M.D., M.P.H., director of the Welch Center for Prevention, Epidemiology and Clinical Research at Johns Hopkins revealed that many Americans consume much more sodium than any of the study participants did. People may avoid some headaches simply by reducing salt consumption.
The study was published in the journal BMJ Open.
