Majority of women unaware of female-specific stroke symptoms

Washington, April 28 (ANI): It turns out that most women don't know many female-centric symptoms and risks of strokes.
A national survey of 1,000 women by The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center released in time for Stroke Awareness Month found that only 11 percent of women could correctly identify pregnancy, lupus, migraine headaches and oral contraception or hormone replacement therapy as female-specific stroke risks.
The survey also found that only 10 percent were aware that hiccups combined with atypical chest pain are among the early warning signs of a stroke in women when accompanied by or followed by typical stroke symptoms.
According to the National Stroke Association, stroke is the third leading cause of death for women.
Dr. Diana Greene-Chandos said that things like pregnancy, hormone replacement therapy and even something as trivial as a case of the hiccups could all play an important role when it comes to strokes in women, and there was a need to be more aware of it.
Some risk factors are the same for both women and men, including smoking, not exercising or having a blood pressure higher than 140/90. Other stroke risk factors for men and women include having a hemoglobin A1C of more than 7 if you are already diabetic, or 5.7 if not; as well as having a LDL cholesterol of less than 100 if you are without additional stroke risks, or less than 70 with additional stroke risks, particularly diabetes, she said.
Greene-Chandos added that both women and men should focus keeping their blood pressure under 140/90, because having high blood pressure consistently puts people at risk for having a stroke.
But symptoms of stroke can be different for women, and may include hiccups, dizziness that is not classic vertigo, headaches, atypical chest pain and/or numbness of the entire body with one side being more numb than the other.
Greene-Chandos, who is also a member of Ohio State's Neurological Institute, said that pregnancy also increased the risk of stroke, particularly in the final months and the immediate period after delivering the child.
Recognizing a stroke quickly and seeking medical help immediately is crucial. Treatment with a clot-busting drug is only consistently an option within three hours of the onset of the stroke.
The Ohio State survey also found that nearly half of all women said they don't know what problems females face after stroke. In addition to nerve damage and problems swallowing, depression is common among women and often keeps them from getting the rehab that is vital to their recovery, Greene-Chandos said. (ANI)

Weight conscious women smokers less likely to try quitting smoking

Washington, Apr 7 (ANI): A new research has examined that women smokers, who are concerned about their weight, are less likely to try to quit smoking.
The research conducted at University of Illinois at Chicago suggested that smokers who are concerned about their weight are less swayed by anti-smoking policies such as bumps in cigarette prices, smoke-free laws or anti-tobacco messaging than other smokers are.
Lead author Ce Shang said that they found that concerns about weight were a significant barrier to quitting among U.K. smokers and U.S. female smokers who believe smoking helps them manage weight.

The researchers looked at survey data from about 10,000 smokers in the U.S., Canada, the U.K. and Australia as part of the International Tobacco Control Policy Evaluation Project. The ITC Project conducts longitudinal surveys of smokers and tobacco users across 22 countries.
Respondents completed three surveys between 2002 and 2007 that asked questions on whether they agreed with the statement that smoking helps control weight; on their attempts to quit smoking and on their exposure to tobacco policies such as price, anti-smoking messaging, and smoking bans at work or in public.
For female smokers who did not believe that smoking helps control weight, a 10 percent increase in cigarettes price was associated with a 6 percent rise in attempts to quit, while women who thought smoking does help control weight did not significantly increase their attempts to quit in response to a price increase. Additionally, while a 10 percent increase in exposure to anti-smoking messaging was associated with a 12 percent increase in quit attempts among those who did not hold the weight-control belief, no increase in quit attempts was reported by smokers who did so believe.
The researchers found similar patterns among smokers in the U.K., but no differences in attempts to quit that correlated to the belief about weight-control in smokers of either gender in Australia or Canada.
The study is published online in the journal Tobacco Control. (ANI)

High exposure to air pollution increases pregnancy complications

Washington, US: A new study has revealed that new evidence linking high exposure to air pollution to an increased risk of congenital malformations have been discovered.
The nationwide study is the first to assess the association between different modes of conception-assisted reproductive technology (ART) versus spontaneous conception (SC) -- and the risks of exposure to air pollution to each.
The research team analyzed data on 216,730 born in Israel between 1997 and 2004. Air pollution data, including levels of sulfur dioxide (SO2), particulate matter (PM10), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and ozone (O3), were obtained from air monitoring stations for the study period. Using a geographic information system, exposure to air pollution during both the first trimester and the entire pregnancy was assessed for each woman according to her place of residence.
The researchers found that exposure to PM10 and NOX pollutants throughout full-term pregnancies were associated with an increased risk of congenital malformations, with specific defects evident in the circulatory system (from PM10 and NOX exposure) and genital organs (from NOX exposure). They also discovered that exposure to SO2 and O3 in ART pregnancies were associated, although not significantly, with a higher risk of congenital defects.
The researchers said that the findings suggest that exposure to higher levels of air pollution during pregnancy is associated with various adverse pregnancy outcomes.
The study was published in Environmental Research.

Now, infertile couples may have kids from IVF

London, UK: A new research has demonstrated that infertile couples who cannot produce their own sex cells may finally be able to have children through IVF after scientists achieved a key breakthrough in making sperm and eggs from skin cells.
Researchers have converted human skin cells in a laboratory into the "primordial germ cells" normally found within the testes and ovaries, which develop into mature sperm and eggs, the Independent reported.
Professor Azim Surani of the University of Cambridge said that the development could also lead to a better understanding of the "epigenetic" changes within human cells that contribute to ageing and cancer because of the insights it will give scientists about how adult human skin cells can be reprogrammed into sperm and eggs.

Surani continued that this was the first step in demonstrating that they could make primordial germ cells without putting them into patients to verify they were genuine.
The development could also lead to a better understanding of the "epigenetic" changes within human cells that contribute to ageing and cancer and the development could also lead to a better understanding of the "epigenetic" changes within human cells that contribute to ageing and cancer.

How to maintain weight after shedding the pounds revealed

Washington, US: A new research has revealed that the challenge of long-term weight control, which every individual going through weight loss faces, is because of different genetic, epigenetic and neuro-hormones in the bodies.
A group of obesity experts led by Paul MacLean, PhD, and Rena Wing, PhD at National Institutes of Health Working Group explained personalized weight-loss strategies should be implemented to maintain the weight loss, as effective weight-loss program vary from person to person.
Researchers advised to make use of pharmacological strategies to counter the physiological changes that occur after weight loss, which require adjustments to the drug development process.
Other approaches mentioned in the report were to improve adherence to physical activity programs, intake of foods engineered to maximize palatability and satiation to improve long-term adherence to a lower-calorie diet, following strategies to decrease the perceived reward value of foods and increase impulse control and at last all the technologies and social networking to keep individuals engaged and goal-oriented.
Dr. Wing added that development of more effective approaches to weight-loss maintenance requires the integration of physiological and behavioral perspectives and a more concerted collaboration between basic and clinical researchers.

Dr. MacLean, co-chairman of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) working group said that there are many differences in individuals ranging from genetic to behavioral that lead some to do well on one approach, whereas others do not.
The report, "Innovative Research to Improve Maintenance of Weight Loss" will be published in the January 2015 issue of the journal 'Obesity'.
