Results for "Cancer"
Excessive intake of vitamins can lead to Cancer

Washington, Apr 21 (ANI): A new research has examined that excess use of vitamins and dietary supplements can increase the risk of cancer.
The study conducted by University of Colorado Denver suggested that over-the-counter supplements may actually increase cancer risk if taken in excess of the recommended daily amount.
Tim Byers, associate director for cancer prevention and control at the CU Cancer Center asserted that they were not sure why this was happening at the molecular level but evidence showed that people who take more dietary supplements than needed tend to have a higher risk of developing cancer.
One trial exploring the effects of beta-keratin supplements showed that taking more than the recommended dosage increased the risk for developing both lung cancer and heart disease by 20 percent. Folic acid, which was thought to help reduce the number of polyps in a colon, actually increased the number in another trial.
Byers asserted that when they first tested dietary supplements in animal models they found that the results were promising and eventually they were able to move on to the human populations.
He continued that people can get the daily recommended doses of vitamins and minerals in their diets by eating healthy meal and that many adults who take vitamin supplements may not need them.
Byers concluded that at the end of the day they have discovered that taking extra vitamins and minerals did more harm than good. (ANI)

3 glasses of booze per day may cause liver cancer

London, March 25 (ANI): If you are a regular drinker, you might want to put that gas down, as new study has revealed that consuming 3 glasses of alcohol per day can cause liver cancer.
According to World Cancer Research Fund, the analysis of 34 previous studies covering 8.2 million people pinpoints level of drinking implicated in liver cancer, the Guardian reported.
Amanda Mclean, director of the charity's UK branch said that the research was strong enough, for the first time, to be more specific about this, and the findings provoked the Alcohol Health Alliance, a coalition of health organisations, to claim that alcohol is so toxic that cans and bottles should carry health warnings.
Women should try to limit themselves to no more than one drink a day and men to two in order to minimize their risk of the disease, the WCRF said.
The report also pinpoints obesity as a risk factor for liver cancer, and also found strong evidence that coffee could help protect against liver cancer.
However, Paul Pharoah, professor of cancer epidemialogy at Cambridge University, cast doubt on the WCRF's findings saying that he didn't think the data was sufficient to conclude the result. (ANI)

Eating walnuts reduces chance of cancer
A daily handful of walnuts may stave off prostate cancer, according to new research. Scientists have found diets rich in the nut, or its oil, slowed tumour growth in mice. They also reduced cholesterol and increased sensitivity to the hormone insulin which helps prevent diabetes.
Walnuts are a ‘superfood’ naturally high in a host of health boosting chemicals, including omega-3 fatty acids, and have already been shown to protect against breast cancer and heart disease. The latest findings showed they cut levels of the hormone IGF-1, which has been implicated in both prostate and breast cancer. Dr Paul Davis, of the University of California at Davis, said: ‘For years, the United States government has been on a crusade against fat, and I think it has been to our detriment. ‘Walnuts are a perfect example. While they are high in fat, their fat does not drive prostate cancer growth.
‘In fact, walnuts do just the opposite when fed to mice.’ Some 35,000 Britons are diagnosed with it each year, and 10,000 die. The new study, published in the Journal of Medicinal Food, was aimed at finding out if the beneficial properties were unique to walnuts, or whether it was a particular ingredient such as omega-3 fatty acids found in other foods.
The mice were fed whole walnuts, walnut oil or a walnut like fat for 18 weeks. While the two former reduced cholesterol and slowed prostate cancer growth, in contrast, the latter did not have these effects, proving other nut components caused the improvements. Dr Davis said: ‘We showed it is not the omega-3s by themselves, though, it could be a combination of the omega-3s with whatever else is in the walnut oil.
‘It is becoming increasingly clear in nutrition it is never going to be just one thing, it is always a combination.’ While the study did not pinpoint which combination of compounds in walnuts slows cancer growth, it did rule out fibre, zinc, magnesium and selenium. In addition, the research demonstrated walnuts modulate several mechanisms associated with cancer growth.

These Foods can help you, fight against all types of cancers
The countless books and news articles about cancer-fighting foods
might lead you to think you can ward off this dreaded disease simply
by eating better.
Alas, it's not that simple. Anytime you see a headline stating "Cure
cancer naturally," you should run. Running, in fact, will be more
beneficial to your health than whatever that news article is pushing.
There are foods associated with a lower risk of getting cancer. While
that's positive news, remember that this is based merely on what goes
on in Petri dishes and in mice and in human epidemiology studies
revealing, largely in retrospect, that people who ate A, B and C for
"x" years had a y-percent reduction in a cancer riskcompared with a
bunch of slackers who did nothing to stay healthy.
So, there are no guarantees. Consider that among the leading
proponents of the macrobiotic diet— the grain- and vegetable-based
diet purported to cure cancer — Aveline Kushi and her daughter Lilly
died of cancer, Michio Kushi had a tumor removed from his intestine,
and founder George Ohsawa died at the relatively young age of 73,
likely of a heart attack.
Many causes of cancer are environmental, largely from tobacco,
excessive sun exposure and workplace hazards such as chemical solvents
and fumes. Avoidance is the best prevention strategy here.
Aside from that, if you want the odds on your side, the foods in this
list do seem to carry some cancer-protection properties.

Stages of Breast Cancer, Every women Need to Know
After breast cancer has been diagnosed, tests are done to find out if cancer cells have spread within the breast or to other parts of the body.

The process used to find out whether the cancer has spread within the breast or to other parts of the body is called staging. The information gathered from the staging process determines the stage of the disease. It is important to know the stage in order to plan treatment. The following tests and procedures may be used in the staging process:

  • Sentinel lymph node biopsy : The removal of the sentinel lymph node during surgery. The sentinel lymph node is the first lymph node to receive lymphatic drainage from a tumor. It is the first lymph node the cancer is likely to spread to from the tumor. A radioactive substance and/or blue dye is injected near the tumor. The substance or dye flows through the lymph ducts to the lymph nodes. The first lymph node to receive the substance or dye is removed. A pathologist views the tissue under a microscope to look for cancer cells. If cancer cells are not found, it may not be necessary to remove more lymph nodes.
  • Chest x-ray : An x-ray of the organs and bones inside the chest. An x-ray is a type of energy beam that can go through the body and onto film, making a picture of areas inside the body.
  • CT scan (CAT scan): A procedure that makes a series of detailed pictures of areas inside the body, taken from different angles. The pictures are made by a computer linked to an x-ray machine. A dye may be injected into a vein or swallowed to help the organs or tissues show up more clearly. This procedure is also called computed tomography, computerized tomography, or computerized axial tomography.
  • Bone scan : A procedure to check if there are rapidly dividing cells, such as cancer cells, in the bone. A very small amount of radioactive material is injected into a vein and travels through the bloodstream. The radioactive material collects in the bones and is detected by a scanner.
  • PET scan (positron emission tomography scan): A procedure to find malignant tumor cells in the body. A small amount of radioactive glucose (sugar) is injected into a vein. The PET scanner rotates around the body and makes a picture of where glucose is being used in the body. Malignant tumor cells show up brighter in the picture because they are more active and take up more glucose than normal cells do.
There are three ways that cancer spreads in the body.

The three ways that cancer spreads in the body are:

  • Through tissue. Cancer invades the surrounding normal tissue.
  • Through the lymph system. Cancer invades the lymph system and travels through the lymph vessels to other places in the body.
  • Through the blood. Cancer invades the veins and capillaries and travels through the blood to other places in the body.

When cancer cells break away from the primary (original) tumor and travel through the lymph or blood to other places in the body, another (secondary) tumor may form. This process is called metastasis. The secondary (metastatic) tumor is the same type of cancer as the primary tumor. For example, if breast cancer spreads to the bones, the cancer cells in the bones are actually breast cancer cells. The disease is metastatic breast cancer, not bone cancer.
The following stages are used for breast cancer:

This section describes the stages of breast cancer. The breast cancer stage is based on the results of testing that is done on the tumor and lymph nodes removed during surgery and other tests.
Stage 0 (carcinoma in situ)

There are 3 types of breast carcinoma in situ:

Stage I

Stage I breast cancer. Drawing shows stage IA on the left; the tumor is 2 cm or smaller and has not spread outside the breast. Drawings in the middle and on the right show stage IB. In the middle, no tumor is found in the breast, but small clusters of cancer cells are found in the lymph nodes. In the drawing on the right, the tumor is 2 cm or smaller and small clusters of cancer cells are found in the lymph nodes.
Stage I breast cancer. In stage IA, the tumor is 2 centimeters or smaller and has not spread outside the breast. In stage IB, no tumor is found in the breast or the tumor is 2 centimeters or smaller. Small clusters of cancer cells (larger than 0.2 millimeter but not larger than 2 millimeters) are found in the lymph nodes.

In stage I, cancer has formed. Stage I is divided into stages IA and IB.

Stage II

Stage II is divided into stages IIA and IIB.
